ARC Review: Jaded by Anne Calhoun

Jaded - Anne Calhoun

Jaded is the second book in the Walkers Ford series by Anne Calhoun. To be honest, I didn't read the first book in this series and for about half of the book, I would get confused by a few names, but later in the story it really got confusing. Still, it didn't overtake this story but it assumed you had read the first one and left out details I think might have been important.

Alana Wentworth has decided her time at Walkers Ford is coming to an end and she hasn't changed much from when she left her upstanding and rich family in Chicago. After a proposal gone bad, she has come to Walkers Ford as a temporary librarian on contract to help save this treasure. But she wants to step out of her bulky librarian threads and get down and dirty with sheriff she is renting a house from. Just a fling is all she wants from this handsome specimen of a man because her sister and family need her back home doing the research for their foundation.

Lucas Ridgeway has returned to his South Dakotan home town of Walkers Ford to save his marriage. The marriage goes bad anyway and he finds himself divorced and the sheriff of the town. Living next door to his grandparents house, he is renting it to the hot little contract librarian. Broken emotionally by life, Lucas only wants a sexual release, but realizes Alana is getting under his skin. Oh, and he comes across as cold-hearted for a majority of the story.

Melting the Ice (A Play-by-Play Novel) - Jaci Burton

Liking this one much better than the last few books in this series.

ARC Review: Bound by Lorelei James

Bound - Lorelei James

Bound by Lorelei James
Series: Mastered, book #1
Genres: BDSMContemporary Romance
Published by Penguin Group
Published on February 4, 2014
Pages: 400
Format: eARC
Amazon | B&N
Rating: four-stars

There ain’t no cowboys in this story. Ok, no I don’t talk that way. Heck, I correct my kids left and right on double negatives. For real, there isn’t a cowboy in sight in this book and that is what I came to know about Lorelei James. She stepped right out of that genre and hit a home run, but also made me want to throw my Kindle at the wall leaving me in a cliffhanger. Bound is a drama filled erotic story of Ronin and Amery, separated by 10 years of age, some maturity and dark secrets that will bite them in the ass at the end of this book.

The story is about 99% told from Amery Hardwick’s perspective with just a little bit from Ronin’s at the end, but it is told in third person point of view…thank you!!!! Amery is a young woman who grew up in an ultra religious family with one sibling. Moving to Denver with a boyfriend , Amery is stepping slowly away from her background roots. She live separately from her boyfriend, unable to totally break that religious background she grew up with. When she finds her boyfriend cheating on her, she breaks up, losing most of her friends except for Chaz, a gay guy who rents space from her building. Oh, she owns a building where she runs a graphics business, has one intern and rents space to two friends…one is gay and the other is a lesbian.

The story opens up with Amery being the moral support for her intern attending self-defense training. There is no “watching” at this dojo, so Amery has to take the class too where she butts heads with the owner, Ronin, over her attire. Bold, she undresses in front of him, which is totally out of her element. Intrigued with Amery, Ronin takes over Amery’s training both inside and outside of the dojo. Slowly over time Ronin pushes Amery beyond her boundaries. But as Ronin draws Amery out of her shell and opens her up to a totally new erotic world, he holds himself back only doling out little pieces of himself and his past to Amery. But deep secrets start to unravel a little over time causing upheaval to their relationship.

Amery is innocent, but I would not say naive. She knows what is going on in the world, but has no understanding of BDSM or erotic works. Ronin slowly introduces her to bondage, Shibari, Kinbaku and further darker Japanese bondage traditions. While it excites Amery it also terrifies her to hand over so much power to Ronin. Little by little Ronin’s secrets and desires start to unravel putting up walls around Amery that Ronin will have a tough time climbing.

Afternoon Delight: A MacKenzie Christmas

A MacKenzie Christmas - Liliana Hart

A MacKenzie Christmas opens up with the whole MacKenzie clan gathered for Christmas but Grant needs a break from all the nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers, sister, etc. gathered together. Liliana Hart weaves a extremely fast paced story to get Grant the love of his life without his mercenary brothers or cousins stepping in to help.

Grant steps out for a walk to get away from the mountains of MacKenzies that showed up for Christmas. Reflecting on his own single status, he decides he needs to go to "town" to find a bride bring her back and live happily ever after. There aren't many single women left, but one does spark his interest, but she is his little sister's best friend, Annabeth. Annabeth does spark his desire and he thinks he is dreaming when he comes upon her trying to ice skate on the lake.

Oops! She falls in and Grant comes to her rescue, taking her back to his house where lust takes over, passion runs freely and love follows the heart.

Extremely short, its a good way to celebrate Christmas in between opening gifts.

Afternoon Delight: Sanctum by Lexi Blake

Sanctum - Lexi Blake

Sanctum by Lexi Blake is part of the Masters and Mercenaries series, but a small part. Ryan Church is the Dom in Residence at Sanctum, the BDSM club owned by Ian Taggart. With a big idea in his head, he is ready to take on the world again after having lost everything that mattered to him, including his submissive, Jill. When his world fell apart, he ended his contract with her, giving her to another man for caregiving. Never explaining to her what happened he goes off to lick his wounds and try to come back from all the devastating losses he has suffered.

Now Ian is up his ass wanting a new bartender yesterday. Ian being Ian has already arranged the interviews and leaves Ryan with no choice but to hire someone when in walks Jill applying for the job. Now eighteen months later he doesn't feel he has anything to offer her besides the job.

Jill was shattered by Ryan's abrupt turning her over to his friend like she was property. Immediately she leaves this other man and forges her way into life but can only get crappy jobs and even crappier apartments. This bar tending job is step up from the world of stripping. Sucking up her emotions, she takes the job and hopes to hold onto her heart.

Now Ryan has to make a decision: wealth and fortune or Jill. Will he make the correct choice or lose the one woman who can love him completely?

What an powerfully packed short story of miscommunication. Doms don't know it all and really need to be open and as honest as they expect their submissives. This just goes to show Doms do make mistakes and think they are still Gods, lol. Now he has a chance to make it better, but I wondered if he really learned any lessons in 18 months?

Filled with humor, sex, BDSM, and some unsavory types, this story left me feeling fulfilled on a side character I have always wondered about.

Are Doms Gods? Can they be forgiven for not being honest and making critical mistakes?

I needed a break from contemporary and BDSM romances so I thought I would hop back into this series...and right away I am confused.

For some reason the heroine is going through a cleansing period that lasts 10 years and then will go through a binding ceremony (arranged marriage).

So what is a cleansing period and why is she going through one is the first question on my list.
